Apartment Palm

The Toronto Office Apartment Areca Palm or cat palm are  the most common indoor plants known for their air purification ability.

The botanical name is Dypsis lutescens.

Propagation of apartment areca palms

1. They are propagated from cuttings. A stem is cut from a branch and grown in soil with the aid of a rooting hormone. This helps stimulate the rate of plant growth. They later develop roots and can be replanted/reported.
2. They can also be propagated by use of seeds. The seeds are planted in a medium that is well draining and takes close four months to germinate.

Briefly describe the factors involved in maintenance of these plants.

1. Lighting

The plants should be grown in bright but indirect sunlight. Bright light will scorch the leaves hence causes sunburns.

2. Temperature

Moderate room temperatures are the best for these plants. A sudden rise or drop in temperature will affect them. Very cool temperatures cause brown spots on the leaves.

3. Irrigation

Water less frequently in winter. Over watering without provision of good drainage easily kills the plant.

4. Fertilizer application

Feed the plants with water-soluble fertilizers to stimulate growth and boost the plant’s health.

5. Pruning

The Areca plants do not require much trimming. But for a healthy plant, cut the phroms near the trunk, paying attention not to cut the center of the plant.
